MONT ALTO, Pa. — After splitting yesterday against PSUAC rival Penn State Mont Alto in Saturday's home doubleheader, the Penn State Beaver men's baseball team fell to the rivals in Sunday's road game, 9-4.
Mont Alto took an early lead over the Lions with one run in the bottom of the first (1-0). But Beaver answered back when they plated a run in the top of the second inning when sophomore Stefan Romaniuk (Alpha/Notre Dame) singled-in freshman Kyle Redding (Gettysburg) to tie the game at 1-1.
The score was again at 2-2 at the top of the fourth but Mont Alto started to build its lead up over Beaver with two runs after two of its batters flew out to right field, which advanced two Mont Alto runners to home plate (4-2). But the Lions cut the lead down to one run after freshman Trey Luffy (Baldwin) drove freshman Jacob Beck (Beaver) home on an RBI single in the top of the sixth (4-3). But Mont Alto built its lead up again with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the Lions down 6-3. While both teams went scoreless in the seventh, Beaver's batters were quiet in the top of the eight, which prompted Mont Alto to extend its lead to nine after tacking on three more runs in the bottom of the inning (9-3). While Beaver still had a puncher's chance in the top of the ninth after freshman Christian James (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) doubled to advance Romaniuk to score without any outs against the Lions (9-4). However, Beaver collected its three outs shortly after and fell to Mont Alto 9-3.
Romaniuk (Alpha/Notre Dame) led the offense, where he went 4 for 5 at bat and earned 2 RBIs for the day followed by Luffy who went 1 for 2 and earned 1 RBI.
Noah Rinker (Ellwood City/Lincoln) who pitched a complete game (L, 1-5), took the loss for Beaver. Rinker allowed 15 runs and stuck out four of the 43 batters he faced today.
After today's loss to Mont Alto, Beaver sits at an 8-9 record for the season and is 1-2 in the conference.
Beaver will now face PSUAC rival Penn State Fayette at home on Friday, on Mar. 29. The game begins at 2 p.m.
