Pitching Shines as Lions Battle Into 12th in Heartbreaker
Behind a dominant outing on the mound, Penn State Beaver pushed a tight pitchers’ duel deep into extras before falling in a hard-fought 12-inning battle.
Hermatige, PA - Beaver dropped a 12-inning pitchers' duel, 2–1, at Penn State Shenango. Beaver scratched out the game's first run in the third, but the contest stayed tight deep into extra innings before the deciding run came across in the bottom of the 12th. The loss leaves Beaver on the wrong end of a one-run game despite matching the opponent with timely pitching and a handful of key baserunners.
The scoring opened in the third when Jameson Stubbs (2-for-4, run scored) got aboard and eventually came home on Mason Hsu's sacrifice fly for a 1–0 Beaver lead. Shenango answered in the fourth to tie it, and from there both bullpens and defenses held the line through the ninth and into extras. Beaver managed five hits total—doubles from Andres Molinar (1-for-5) and Rome Requena (1-for-4)—but struck out 17 times and left nine on base, limiting chances to add on after the early run.
On the mound, Beaver got a strong start from Justin Perera, who worked 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts, allowing just two hits and one earned run while walking four. Matthew Helmer Jr. followed with 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four and keeping the game even. Nathan Asher took the loss after two innings in relief; the winning run in the 12th was unearned, and Beaver finished with one error in the field. Despite the extra-inning setback, Beaver's pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts across 11 innings and kept the game within reach throughout.
The team was supposed to play game two but due to weather and daylight the game was postponed with no make up date announced yet. The team is currently 1-16 overall with a 0-5 conference record. The team will take the field once again on Monday, April 6th at 2pm and 4pm when they take on Penn State Shenango in the home portion of their series.
