Penn State Beaver split its doubleheader at Beaver Field House on Saturday, earning a dramatic 5–4 walk-off victory in Game 1 before falling 6–1 in Game 2. Beaver rallied late in the opener, overcoming a deficit and capitalizing on a chaotic final inning to secure the win, but couldn't carry that momentum into the second game, where early defensive miscues and a decisive third inning by the visitors proved too much to overcome.
Offensively in Game 1, Beaver finished with 11 hits and five walks, led by Mason Hsu (3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI, double, 2 SB) and Benjamin Ogle (2-for-4, RBI, double). Christopher Cann went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Philip Betz added an RBI and reached base twice (1-for-3, BB). On the mound, Kairu Fujinuma earned the win in his start (5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K), and Matthew Helmer Jr. closed it out with 1.1 scoreless innings (2 H, 1 BB). Beaver committed three errors, but limited the damage enough to stay within striking distance.
In Game 2, Jameson Stubbs accounted for the only run scored, going 1-for-2 with a walk, while Rheece Barone drove him in with an RBI single and finished 1-for-3. Christopher Cann and Nicholas Campbell each added a hit as Beaver totaled four hits and two walks, striking out just twice. On the mound, Cann took the loss after 0.2 innings (2 H, 2 R, 1 ER), Nathan Doutt worked 4.2 innings in relief (5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 K), and Ian Butler closed with 1.2 scoreless innings (1 H, 0 R, 3 K). Defensively, Beaver was charged with two errors, which contributed to early unearned damage.
The scoring swung back and forth in Game 1 after Beaver opened in the third, with the visitors briefly taking control before Beaver answered to tie the game and eventually walk it off in the seventh. In contrast, Game 2 saw Beaver fall behind early after its lone run in the second, as the visitors responded with a four-run third and maintained control the rest of the way. The team will take the field on Sunday, April 12th at 1pm and 1pm when they travel to take on Penn State Fayette. For all things Penn State Beaver Baseball check out beaverathletics.com!
