DUNMORE, Pa.—The Penn State Beaver men's soccer team picked up a second win this week after defeating against PSUAC rival Penn State Scranton 5-3 during Saturday afternoon's road match.
While the teams looked evenly matched for the first 23 minutes, sophomore RJ Long (Atco/Winslow Township) got the ball rolling and scored the first goal for Beaver (1-0). However, the Lions didn't keep the lead for very long, as Scranton tied the score less than two minutes later. At the 34th minute, freshman Moucharaf Tchatikpi (Manhattan/Manhattan Center for Science & Math) took the feed from senior John Kazmierczyk (Conway/Quigley) to score and take back the lead for the Lions (2-1). Beaver's offense got hot with under two to go in the first, which started with freshman Chris Bohach (Conway/Freedom Area) finding an open sophomore Danylo Yakymov (Kiev/Grand Private Lyceum), who scored a third Beaver goal to take a 3-1 lead. Yakymov wasn't done yet, as he connected on a pass from Long 50 seconds later, putting Scranton down by three goals before halftime (4-1).
As the second period commenced, it was Scranton's offense that heated up at the 64th minute, scoring back-to-back goals in under five minutes to cut Beaver's lead to one (4-3). While the teams kept the scoring at bay for the next 18 minutes, it was the Lions who ultimately pulled away with the win after senior John Kazmierczyk (Conway/Quigley) connected on a pass by sophomore Tyler Van Kirk (West Mifflin).
Freshman Brennan Schultz (Kane/Kane Area), who served as goalie for 31 minutes of the game, gave up two goals against SOG he faced. Freshman Julian Hauff (Frederick/Governor Thomas Johnson) served as the goalie 58 minutes and had one save against the two SOG he faced.
Beaver outshot Scranton 35-5 and 14-1 on corner kicks.
Beaver is now 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the PSUAC conference standings. The Lions will hit the road again Sunday, Sept. 22, where they will face off against PSUAC rival Penn State Lehigh Valley for the team's second conference match this weekend. Game time is at 1 p.m.
