Beaver Splits Doubleheader with Dominant Bounce-Back Win After Game 1 Struggles
Penn State Beaver rebounded from a tough opener with an explosive offensive showing to earn a split at home on Sunday.
Monaca, PA - Penn State Beaver split a doubleheader at Beaver Field on April 26, 2026, dropping an 11–1 decision in the opener before responding with an 11–3 win in the nightcap. In Game 1, the visitors seized control immediately, scoring five runs in the opening inning and building a 7–1 lead through the middle frames before adding four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Penn State Beaver managed six hits but was hindered by four defensive errors and multiple unearned runs that prolonged innings. In Game 2, Beaver rebounded quickly, answering a two-run first inning by the visitors with four runs of its own and never trailing again. The offense continued to produce with single runs in the second, three in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory, improving to 12–20 overall and 5–7 in conference play.
At the plate in Game 1, Jaiden Patterson led Penn State Beaver by going 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, and the team's lone run scored. Reza Benson finished 1-for-3, while Kierstyn Mays, Mackenzie Boyd, Cheyenne Duhl, and Haley Cook each recorded a hit, with Cook also adding a double. The only RBI came on a third-inning sacrifice groundout by Katarina Eck. In the circle, Mays threw 1.2 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Benson provided 4.1 innings of relief, surrendering five runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts, while also allowing a home run and a wild pitch.
Game 2 featured a breakout offensive performance, led by Jaiden Patterson's 3-for-3 effort that included a double, a home run, four runs scored, one RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Reza Benson drove in four runs while going 2-for-4 and also contributed in the circle, and Haydan Baucan added a 2-for-4 day with two runs, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Reese Riordan chipped in with a two-run single (1-for-2, two RBI, walk), while Cheyenne Duhl went 2-for-3 with a double, a run, an RBI, and a walk. In the circle, Mackenzie Boyd earned the win with 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out two, and Benson closed out the fifth inning.
The doubleheader highlighted both ends of the spectrum for Penn State Beaver, as early defensive struggles and unearned runs proved costly in the opener, while a fast offensive response and sustained pressure fueled a decisive turnaround in Game 2. Despite generating six hits and two walks in the first game, Beaver couldn't string together enough offense after the third inning and was forced to navigate extended innings created by errors. In contrast, the nightcap showcased timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and consistent production, as Beaver totaled 12 hits and seven walks to keep constant pressure on the defense. Tightening up defensively while continuing to capitalize on scoring opportunities will be key as Beaver looks to build on the momentum from the second game.
