Monaca, PA- The Lady Lions of Penn State Beaver (15-9, 12-3 PSUAC) played in the Elite Eight round of the PSUAC playoffs tonight against Penn State Hazelton (Hazelton, PA).
Coleen Mead (Newport Harbor/Costa Mesa, CA) opened up the game with a three pointer, setting the tone for the game early. The opening minutes of the game started out 5-4 before Kalynn Hill (Montour/Pittsburgh, PA) started off a 15-0 run for the Lady Lions expanding their lead to 20-4 with 13:25 left in the first half. The Lady Lions kept their momentum going, and a layup by Brittany Tomaselli (East Liverpool/East Liverpool, OH) in the closing seconds of the first half gave Beaver a 41-21 lead at halftime.
Hazelton gave Beaver a bit of a scare in the second half, going on a 10-0 run to bring the game within ten (41-31) with 16:08 left in the game. Mead ended their run, and a key three pointer from Tomaselli expanded their lead back to 15 (46-31) with 13:26 left. Despite Hazelton's late comeback, and bringing the game within nine (51-42), Beaver went on to win for the night 57-45. The Lady Lions have advanced to the Final Four round.
Tomaselli and Brooke Mulneix (Riverside/Beaver Falls, PA) lead the Lady Lions tonight with 14 points each, followed by Mead with 12, and Hill with 10. Mulneix also recorded another double-double with 13 rebounds, followed by Amanda Temple (Avella/Avella, PA) with 10.
Beaver will play Penn State Brandywine (Media, PA) in the Final Four round this Friday, February 24, 2012 at 3 p.m at Penn State Mont Alto.
