Monaca, Pa.—Welcome back, lady lions. After placing as runners-up in the PSUAC conference championship last season, the Penn State Beaver women's volleyball team was ready to get back to business on Friday afternoon for its home opener of the 2019 season. The ladies took on Johnson & Wales (NC) University for game one followed by Christendom College for game two during the USCAA Volleyball Tip-Off.
In the first match, Beaver couldn't get over the scoring hump against Johnson & Wales despite some close opportunities and took a 25-21 loss in set one, followed by a 25-14 loss in the second and a close 25-22 set loss in the third.
Senior Amanda Mike (Hopewell) lead in kills with eight followed by sophomore Emily Keener (Utica), who earned six of her own. Sophomore Kelsie Hallum (Hopewell) racked up an impressive 25 assists. Sophomore Heaven Bowman (Houston/ Dulles) recorded 12 digs and two service aces as well.
Despite the early loss, the lady ladies served up a redeeming performance in game two against Christendom.
Beaver handed Christendom a 25-18 loss in set one. The lady lions then had their best set-performance in the second set, rallying to a 25-9 victory. The offense kept the pressure on Christendom, allowing Beaver to tally up another double-digit set victory against Christendom, 25-14, in the third.
Mike was at the helm of Beaver's offense once again, leading in kills with eight. Hallum recorded 15 assists and five service aces in the game. Freshman Ashley Rabang (El Dorado Hills / Oak Ridge) tallied up 10 digs in game two.
The lady lions (1-1) will be back for game two at home on Saturday, Aug. 31, where their opponent is TBA. Game time is at 12 p.m.
