UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— In the highly anticipated rematch of last year's PSUAC Championship, the Penn State Beaver volleyball team Penn State Fayette, once again, faced rival Penn State Fayette for the 2019 PSUAC title on Tuesday night. However, the Lady Lions were defeated 3-0.
Beaver was slightly ahead in the early rallies of the first set (4-3), but Fayette then made a 9-1 run to put Beaver in a 13-5 deficit midway through the set. Fayette then went up 21-9, but Beaver fought hard until the end, closing the point gap to 5 at 21-16, but Fayette pulled away with a 25-17 win in the first.
Set two featured a closer contest between the rivals, as Beaver came out aggressive with a 4-0 run to open the second set, but Fayette answered back with a 4-0 of its own to tie the set, 4-4. The teams were neck-to-neck with the game tied 21-21 down the stretch, but an error at the neck and four late kills handed Beaver a tough 25-21 loss in set two.
Despite playing a closer match in set two, the Lady Lions struggled in the final set and took a 25-3 loss, placing in second in the PSUAC conference standings.
Inside the box
Sophomore Kelsie Hallum (Hopewell) led the team in assists with 15.
On defense, sophomore Heaven Bowman (Houston/Dulles) led the team with 22 digs.
Despite the outcome, The Lady Lions had a great season, finishing with a 19-10 record and placed as runner-up with an 8-4 record in the PSUAC standings.
