Beaver Unable to Hold Lead, Drops Doubleheader at Home
Beaver jumped out to early leads but couldn't hold on, dropping both games of a doubleheader at home.
Monaca, PA - Penn State Beaver dropped a pair of games over the weekend at Beaver Fields, falling 8–6 and 16–2 on Sunday afternoon. Despite showing early promise in both contests, the Lions were unable to maintain momentum. In Game 1, Beaver took a 4–0 lead through two innings before a six-run swing in the fourth put the visitors ahead. Although Beaver managed to tie the game in the fifth, two more runs in the sixth proved to be the difference. Game 2 saw Beaver fall behind early and never recover, with the visitors piling on runs, including a decisive five-run fifth inning. A combination of defensive miscues and pitching struggles ultimately led to the lopsided defeat in both games.
Offensively in Game 1, Beaver was led by Mason Hsu, who went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk. Christopher Cann delivered the biggest hit of the day, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a clutch two-run single in the fourth to tie the game at 6–6. Nathan Doutt added a 2-for-3 day with a double and two RBIs, while Benjamin Ogle contributed a 1-for-2 line with a double, a run, and two walks. On the mound, Kairu Fujinuma took the loss after 3.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits with two strikeouts. Nicholas Hayes and Nathan Asher each pitched in relief, with Hayes giving up two runs over 2.2 innings, while Asher tossed a scoreless inning. Unfortunately, six defensive errors for Beaver played a significant role in the close loss.
In Game 2, Christopher Cann went 1-for-2 with a double and scored a run, while Daniel Goff also finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Andres Molinar drove in a run with an RBI single, and Omar DeGracia picked up an RBI via a bases-loaded walk. Philip Betz doubled as part of Beaver's five-hit performance. On the mound, Rheece Barone took the loss after 2.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs. Oscar De Luigi (1.1 innings) and EJ Keener (1.0 inning) worked in relief, but Beaver's pitching staff struggled with control, issuing 11 walks and hitting three batters. This free pass barrage allowed the visitors to extend innings and put up big numbers.
Despite the lopsided score in both games, Beaver showed glimpses of what it could build on as the season progresses. In Game 1, the lineup demonstrated timely extra-base hits and multi-RBI performances, particularly from Cann, Doutt, and Hsu. However, a combination of costly errors and pitching damage in the middle innings made the difference. Game 2, while more one-sided, also saw flashes of offensive production, with extra-base hits from Cann and Betz and run production from Molinar and DeGracia. Moving forward, Beaver will need to focus on tightening up its defense and limiting walks to avoid similar results. If the Lions can clean up those areas while maintaining their offensive output, they should find themselves in a better position to win close games.
The boys will be back on Beaver's field this Friday, April 3 playing versus Penn State Shenango. Please be sure to join on the Rise and Roar Network to watch upcoming games!
